Medical Weight-Loss Program Helping People To Turn The Tide On Obesity Epidemic In Australia

Australians have been struggling with obesity for the last few decades. It’s a problem that has affected all age groups and demographics, but indigenous people have been affected the most. In fact, indigenous Australians are twice as likely to be obese, which makes the risk of developing type-2 diabetes increase dramatically.

The Troubling Statistics

Obesity is measured in adults using the body mass index (BMI), which is determined by dividing weight (kilograms) by height (metres squared). A BMI greater than 25 is considered overweight, and anything over 30 is considered obese.

These levels are determined based on rates of chronic obesity-related diseases and are used internationally by the World Health Organisation. In Australia, obesity rates remain very high. In fact, around 14 million Australians have a BMI above the level for overweight, and of those, 5 million are above the level for obese.

Obesity-related health problems have passed smoking as the leading cause of illness and premature death across the country, which makes it the greatest threat to public health in Australia. The younger generation is in danger of having a shorter life expectancy than their parents, and this is even truer for indigenous Australians.

Health problems related to obesity have skyrocketed. For example, more than 900,000 people in the country suffer from diabetes, and high blood pressure, hypertension and sleep apnea are all on the rise. More children are experiencing these health problems at younger ages.

Cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease and diabetes, in particular, are responsible for two-thirds of all deaths in the country. The risk factors for these three conditions include lack of physical activity, high blood pressures and obesity.

Some of the causes of this obesity epidemic include changes in eating habits, increasingly sedentary lifestyles and poor sleeping habits. Many of the bad habits that contribute to being overweight are learned in childhood.

Fortunately, the situation is far from hopeless, and there are many Australians who are working to turn the tide in the obesity epidemic. Dr. G’s Weight Loss & Wellness is helping people develop healthier habits and lose weight both effectively and quickly.

Our medical weight-loss program works by creating an individualized diet and exercise plan, along with using proper supplements and medicines to deal with metabolism and appetite. A weight-loss doctor is there to guide you along the way, provide motivation and advice, and help you keep the weight off.
