How to Overcome the Dreaded Weight Loss Plateau
No simple diet or workout plan can overcome tens of thousands of years of human evolution. Because food was scarce for most of our time on this Earth, our bodies strive to obtain a state of equilibrium at all times. That means our metabolisms speed up or slow down based on food intake. This allowed our ancestors go days, even weeks without food. It’s also the reason why losing weight in a time of plenty is so challenging.
As every dieter knows, the first five or ten pounds come off pretty easily. In fact, dieters often say they simply melt away. But after that, it gets harder and harder to take off unwanted pounds. This weight loss plateau can be surmounted, but it won’t be easy. Here’s how to do it.
Change your exercise routine. Like many things in life, exercise is subject to the law of diminishing returns. In other words, our bodies get used to certain activities and perform them far more efficiently. That means we use less energy (calories) when we do them, which means less weight loss. The only way to avoid this barrier is to mix our workouts up a bit. Incorporating new exercises into regular routines is the most effective way to continue losing weight by challenging our bodies.
