3 Easy and Effective Ways to Avoid Overeating During the Holidays
It’s happened to all of us. At a crowded holiday get-together, a well-meaning relative hands us a heaping plate and urges us to eat. Perhaps they even use the line, “Eat, eat, you’re skin and bones,” to get us to dig in. Now, how can we possibly say “no” to that? The only way to turn them down without insulting them is exercise a bit of tact. Here’s three easy ways to stick to your diet in the face of an all-out caloric assault.
1. Inject a little levity. Rather than turning them down flat, keep it lighthearted. A line like, “No, no…If I ate another bite, I’d explode,” should suffice.
2. Be firm, but polite. Instead of waffling or saying something like, “I really shouldn’t,” let them know from start that you aren’t interested in eating. The offerer shouldn’t b e offended if you answer them with conviction.
3. Compliment the dish, even as you turn it down. The number one reason people overeat during the holidays is that the person who cooked the dish offers it to them, and they simply can’t risk offending them by say no. One easy way to avoid this awkward situation is to reassure them that their creation was delicious, but that you really and truly are stuffed.
